Work Study / Internship Opportunity

Toronto-based contemporary artists Dana Samuel and Mark Schilling are seeking a Media Archivist/Studio Assistant Intern for the winter academic term from January through April 2007.

This 16-week internship requires one day per week, and is ideal for a 3rd or 4th year media-savvy student enrolled in a contemporary arts program in the Toronto area. Appropriate specialties include Sculpture/Installation, Integrated Media, Criticism and Curatorial Practice. Artists Dana Samuel and Mark Schilling have been working both collaboratively and independently since 1996. Both are OCAD graduates of Sculpture/Installation, and preference will be given to OCAD students for this opportunity.

Dana Samuel is a Toronto-based media artist, designer and writer. Her writing has been published by Canadian Art, FUSE Magazine, Stride Gallery in Calgary and Mercer Union in Toronto. A graduate of the University of Western Ontario (MFA) and the Ontario College of Art & Design, she has shown her performance-based installations at venues including Latitude 53 (Edmonton), Dalhousie Art Gallery (Halifax), Katherine Mulherin Contemporary Art (Toronto) and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Recent art projects include an audio residency and exhibition in Oslo, Norway. Dana has received design awards and accolades from the National Magazine Awards Foundation, the Art Director’s Club of New York and the Advertising and Design Club of Canada. Visit danasamuel.com.

Mark Schilling is an artist and writer who received both his MFA and MA in art history from the University of Western Ontario and an undergraduate degree from OCAD. He co-curated, with Dana Samuel, future_feed_forward: a festival of performance & media art for Forest City Gallery in London, Ontario. Mark has exhibited in Canada and the US and has exhibitions in Italy and the UK in 2007. His writing has been published by Parachute Magazine, FUSE Magazine and the Art Gallery of Bishop's University, Lennoxville, Quebec. Mark has worked for V tape and the Red Head Gallery and is currently Festival Manager of the Images Festival.

The goal of this placement is to complete an archive of media works by the artists, assist in digitizing key works, and create archive files of press and ephemera. The learning outcomes are as following:
- to gain insight into the artistic process of contemporary media-based artists
- to gain administrative and archival experience with contemporary art
- to learn about exhibition, funding, press and research opportunities for emerging and mid-career artists

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:
- superior organizational skills
- intermediate competence in audio/video digitizing, editing and burning of CD/DVD media on Macintosh platform
- friendly disposition, trustworthiness and ability to take direction
- some administrative experience
- ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Location of artist studio is at St. Clair / Christie in Toronto.

Upon successful completion of this internship, the student will receive course credit as well as employment references and a modest cash honorarium.
