This work uses the balloon animal, a common souvenir of the fair or circus, as a way to address classification and collection within biological organization. Using classical Linnean taxonomy, I have developed categories for all possible forms of the balloon animal and given them proper Latin names (for example, “Adjungum Poufus,” the “Double Poodle,” or “Sextaflagella Pinus,” “Six-tailed cluster.”) I hand out cards which list Latin and English names and an illustration of a given species and hand them to passers by. If they engage with me, I make the corresponding animal for them.
